Does OBD2 work on all cars?
Before you buy an OBD2 scanner, or plug in the one you have, it's worth knowing whether your car speaks OBD2 at all. For most cars on the road in North America it does. The exceptions are predictable.
What year did OBD2 start?
OBD II is an emissions rule, so the dates come from emissions regulators.
| Where | Who has to have it | From | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Gasoline and alternate-fuel passenger cars and trucks | 1996 model year | CARB fact sheet |
| United States | Diesel passenger cars and trucks | 1997 model year | CARB fact sheet |
| Canada | Light-duty vehicles and trucks, and heavier pickups and vans up to 6,350 kg (14,000 lb) | 2004 model year, under federal rules that adopt the US requirements | SOR/2003-2, sections 12 and 13 |
| Canada | Heavy-duty engines in vehicles over 6,350 kg (14,000 lb) | 2014 model year | SOR/2003-2, section 16 |
CARB's fact sheet notes that the US EPA requires OBD on all 1996 and newer passenger cars and trucks "sold in any state", and that a small number of 1994 and 1995 gasoline models had OBD II early. In Canada, the federal regulation requires each light-duty vehicle to "be equipped with an on-board diagnostic system" that meets the US standard for its model year. Cars sold in Canada before 2004 were mostly built to the same specifications as their US versions, so many from the late 1990s on have OBD II too (our inference). Check the car rather than assuming.
How do I know if my car is OBD1 or OBD2?
- Read the emission label. CARB's advice: look for the words "OBD II" on the emission control information label under the hood.
- Find the connector. California's rule puts it in the driver's footwell area, between the driver's door side and the center console, no higher than the bottom of the steering wheel at its lowest position, and not on the console itself. If it has a cover, the cover must come off by hand and be labeled (CARB 1968.2, section (f)(2)).
- Count the pins. An OBD II connector is a 16-pin, two-row D-shaped socket. A different shape means an older or non-standard system.
Do all OBD2 cars use the same protocol?
Every OBD II car answers the same standard questions, but not always over the same wiring. California's rule allowed four protocols on earlier cars, SAE J1850, ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230-4 and CAN (ISO 15765-4), and required CAN on all 2008 and later models (section (f)(3)). A genuine ELM327 handles all of them and searches automatically (Elm Electronics). If a scanner works on your newer car but not on a 1990s or early-2000s one, the protocol is the first suspect; see why an OBD2 scanner won't connect.
The newest cars are changing again. California's current rule lets carmakers use a newer diagnostic standard, SAE J1979-2, on 2023–2026 vehicles and requires it from the 2027 model year (13 CCR 1968.2). A tool built only for the older SAE J1979 may not read those cars fully (our inference), so check support before buying a scanner for a brand-new car.
Which cars don't work with OBD2?
Cars older than the rules
Before OBD II, makers used their own diagnostic systems and connectors. A standard OBD2 adapter can't read them; you need a tool made for that make and era.
Does OBD2 work on heavy trucks?
Canada's regulation sets separate on-board diagnostic requirements for heavy-duty engines in vehicles over 6,350 kg (14,000 lb). Those trucks commonly talk SAE J1939, which Elm's data sheet describes as the "truck and bus" protocol. A genuine ELM327 supports it, but many low-cost adapters and apps don't (our inference). Everyday pickups and vans fall under the light- and medium-duty rules and work like cars.
Overseas and right-hand-drive imports
A car built for another market was built to that market's rules. Canada lets vehicles 15 years old or older in without meeting Canadian safety standards, because, as Transport Canada puts it, such a vehicle "is no longer regulated" under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Right-hand-drive imports brought in this way may have a 16-pin connector and still not answer a North American scanner fully (our inference). Try before you buy a tool for one.
Do electric cars have OBD2?
OBD II rules exist to monitor emissions, and a battery-electric car has no engine for them to watch (our reading of why EV support varies). Many EVs still have the 16-pin connector, used for service, but how much a generic scanner can read from it varies widely by maker and model. Plug-in hybrids and hybrids have engines and do have OBD II.
Motorcycles
The car OBD II rules don't cover them; motorcycle diagnostics vary by maker.
What can a generic OBD2 scanner read?
On an OBD II car, any standard scan tool can read the emission-related trouble codes, pending and confirmed, the readiness status emissions tests check, freeze-frame data and a stream of live engine data, and the VIN on 2005 and later models (CARB 1968.2, section (f)(4)). That's the same standard data from a cheap adapter or a professional tool. What it doesn't give you is everything else in the car: anti-lock brake, airbag and body modules use manufacturer-specific requests. Our article on scanner subscriptions explains where that line falls.
Where Tachwise fits
The free Tachwise app beta reads that standard OBD II data through your own Bluetooth Low Energy ELM327 adapter and explains it in plain language. When you add your car, it decodes the VIN to fill in the make, model and year. The Tachwise device, which isn't for sale yet, will plug into the same port; join the waitlist and tell us your car so we know which models to test.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my car has OBD2?
Look for the words "OBD II" on the emission control information label under the hood, which is the check the California Air Resources Board suggests. The 16-pin connector should also be in the driver's footwell area, no higher than the bottom of the steering wheel, as California's rule requires.
Do all 1996 cars have OBD2?
All 1996 and newer gasoline passenger cars and trucks sold in the US are required to have OBD II, according to the California Air Resources Board, and diesels from 1997. CARB adds that a small number of 1994 and 1995 gasoline models had it early. In Canada, the federal requirement dates from the 2004 model year, so check the label on a Canadian car from before then.
Does OBD2 work on electric cars?
Partly, and it varies by model. OBD II rules exist to monitor emissions, and a battery-electric car has no engine for them to watch. Many EVs still have the 16-pin connector for service, but what a generic scanner can read from it differs a lot between makers, so check for your model before buying a scanner for an EV.
Does OBD2 work on heavy trucks?
Not with most consumer adapters. Canada's emission rules set separate on-board diagnostic requirements for heavy-duty engines in vehicles over 6,350 kg (14,000 lb), and those trucks commonly use the SAE J1939 protocol, which many low-cost adapters don't support (our inference). Pickups and vans up to 14,000 lb are covered by the light- and medium-duty rules.
Do all cars have the same OBD2 port?
Every OBD II car uses the same 16-pin connector, which California's rule places in the driver's footwell area, no higher than the bottom of the steering wheel. Behind it, cars built before 2008 may use one of four protocols, while all 2008 and later models use CAN. A different connector shape means an older or non-standard system.
